The unknown
Most fashion designers or students of fashion design have waited years to reach fame and glorified respect within the industry. Through blood, sweat, tears and sleepless nights of cutting, sewing, draping and sketching designers climb up the fashion latter and pray for an appointment at a couture house. Big names moving from into key couture positions have always made headlines and stirred the fashion world. But as of late fashion houses have been looking for more than just a name.
Olivier Rousteing (Balmain, picture right), Umit Benan (Trussardi, picture lower right), and Alistair Carr (Pringle) are proof of just some of the industry making the change from famous, paparazzi prone names to raw young talent. The industry is no longer in the glamour and glitz of the 1990′s. This is the time in fashion were brands are thoughtful in choosing their talent. “Personality is key as well, being a storyteller to his or her team and to the brand audience, to make the people feel they want to be part of the community” says Floraine de Saint Pierre (Womans Wear Daily, Thursday July 7th 2011 page 12). Rather than keep an elitest wall up between the brand and it’s consumers, brands are looking to bridge those connections by seeking designers whom create beautiful garments and breathe a connected life into each piece.
For all you fashion designers, fret not. Your shot to the top is closer than you think. No paparazzi required.
