The fashion business is nearly a one trillion dollar industry that changes quite quickly. They impact the economy in every way from fabric production and costs to shipping and packing needs. All of these areas allow f
or jobs to be created, forwarding our economy and helping families. These areas also contribute to the environment. Sadly, with increasingly high turn over rates in fashion also comes massive impacts on the earth. Misuse of fabric (nearly 15 to 20 percent of fabric used is discarded due to misuse, WWD), carbon emissions in the air and factory wastes into our water supplies. The urgency on this matter has led one woman to create a call to action.
Sharon Chang, Founder of Yoxi presents “Trim the Waste of Fashion”, an online competition calling fashion designers to social change. From now through July 8th, teams can submit one to two minute videos showcasing strategies for success in the three round series.
The final two teams will be flown to NYC for an event taking place during fashion week. The winning team will take home $40,000 and valuable industry knowledge to kick off their greener brands.

Not a fashion designer? No worries, you too can help fashion’s green initiatives. Here are six environment friendly tips for all you fashionistas:
1) Don’t throw it in the bag. Take a durable eco friendly bag from home and put all your fashion buys in there during your next shopping spree. It’s easy on the environment and easier on your hands.
2) Think outside the box. Like most shoe/sneaker fanatics we all want to keep our fabulous foot wear in their original packing. Consider, a shoe rack/shelf for those crispy kicks or stunning heels and take the boxes to your local recycling center. It’s a way to give back and free up closet space! http://www.recyclebank.com/
3) Trash to treasure. Getting new duds for the upcoming season? Don’t toss them in the garbage. Deliver them to your local good will, thrift store or church. giving back is always in fashion. http://www.goodwill.org/
4) The more the merrier. The next time you’re planning a full day shopping spree consider car pooling with your pals or taking public transportation. That’ll give less emissions to mother earth and more money to your shopping budget.
5) Fashion Home Makeover. Have old t-shirts or jeans lying around that you no longer wear but can’t bare to discard? How about cutting those up to make a fabulous quilt. This way you reuse the fabric and always have a piece of you favorite apparel in your home. http://www.toocooltshirtquilts.com/
6) Take care. Make sure to read the care labels on clothes. The better you take care of them the longer they will last. Also remember to dry clean when needed and necessary. Oh, and classic pieces are a great way to have a transitional wardrobe season after season, saving the environment and your wallet!
